    Módulo VCO

    Module A-110 is a voltage-controlled oscillator. This VCO's frequency range is about eight octaves (ca. 15Hz ... 8kHz). It can produce four waveforms simultaneously: square, sawtooth, triangle, and sine wave. 

    The frequency or pitch of the VCO is determined by the position of the octave (Range) switch and tuning (Tune) knob, and by the voltage present at the CV inputs. 

    Frequency modulation (FM) of the VCO is therefore a possibility. 

    Footage (the octave of the fundamental) is set by the Range control in five steps, and Fine tuning controlled by the Tune knob by about +/-1 one semitone (can be modified for a wider range). 

    You can control the pulse width of the square wave either by hand, or by voltage control - Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. 

    Technical remarks: 
    The core of the A-110 is a sawtooth oscillator (in contrast to the A-111-1, which is based on a triangle oscillator). 

    The other waveforms are derived from the sawtooth by internal waveform converters. As the sawtooth reset (i.e. the back-to-zero slope) is not infinite fast but takes a little bit of time the derived waveforms triangle and sine are not perfect ! At the top of the waveform they have a small glitch or notch that is caused by the sawtooth reset and cannot be eliminated by the waveform converters. The sine is derived from the triangle by a simple diode-based converter and 
    the sine shape is not perfect (only a rounded triangle).

    Module A-120 is a voltage controlled low-pass filter, which filters out the higher parts of the sound spectrum, and lets lower frequencies pass through. 
    The Cut-Off Frequency determines the point at which filtering takes effect. 

    You can control this manually, or by voltage control (filter modulation, for instance by an LFO). Three CV inputs are available, and the sum of the voltages from these affects the filter cut-off. 

    VCF1 is a co-called "transistor ladder" design, with a cut-off slope of -24 dB/octave, as in various Moog synthesizers. 
    That's what gives it its classic, legendary Moog sound. 
    Resonance (or Emphasis) is adjustable all the way up to self-oscillation - in which case the filter behaves like a sine wave oscillator.

    As a spinoff of the discontinued and sought-after MIDI Talking Synth Flame now releases a new Eurorack module: the Talking Synth. 

    This product is also based on the SpeakJet chip that produces idiosyncratic sounds: from more or less sick robot speech to obscure synthesizer sounds. 
    The SpeakJet is not sample based as you might think, it has its own sound engine. 

    The Talking Synth offers three modes: 
    - SYNTH - internal synthesizer sounds 
    - PHONEMES - speech phonemes and effect sounds 
    - WORDS - ready-made words 

    In the first mode the layout of the pots is as follows: 1=Pitch, 2=noise, 3=LFO, 4=Osc. 
    In contrast the speech mode has 1=pitch, 2=bend, 3=speed, 4=sound. 
    The four parameters can be controlled manually with the potentiometers and also with CVs (0-10V).

    The Flame Arpeggiator 20013 is a 2 channel arpeggiator with separate analog outputs for the pitch CV, gate and velocity as well as the sequence clock. 
    Both arpeggios are also sent to the MIDI out port (channel 1 and 2). The first 4 notes of the arpeggio are availabe at CV Out 1-4 as well as MIDI channel 3. 
    Chords and scales can be adjusted with an internal keyboard and saved to 16 different user patches. 
    There are 9 different arpeggiator modes, each one contains several different directions like up, down,up/down... 
    Functions like Arpeggiator-Mode, Note-Repeat, Octave-Range and Sequence-Pattern are voltage controlable. 
    The internal sequencer can be synchronized from an external MIDI-clock.

    The 4Vox is a quad wavetable oscillator with up to four voices per VCO, resulting in a maximum of 16 voices at four individual outputs. With the MIDI In the module can be played both with CVs and directly via MIDI which also allows for modulating some additional parameters. There are 39 memory locations for wavetables and 32 for all global parameters of the VCOs.

    The parameters of a wavetable can be controlled by CVs and by MIDI. For instance you can morph through a wavetable with a CV, a MIDI controller or manually with the potentiometer. The range of waves within a wavetable can be selected by minimum and maximum values individually per voice which allows for creating more complex morphs.
    Further controllable parameters are Detune, Semitone, Octave, Chord, Portamento, Amplitude and Amp Move (90 degrees phase shifted volume modulation of a VCO's 4 voices). Min and max values can be selected for those parameters as well. Via MIDI it's possible to control further parameters (notes, chords, pitch bend, patch selection and wavetable selection)

    The VCOs can be played analog (frequency by Pitch CV input), monophonic via MIDI or 4-voice polyphonic via MIDI.
    The VCO can be used as a voltage controllable LFO with 3 modes: loop, one shot and gates. The SYNC input is used to trigger/reset the LFO. In one shot mode the LFO can be used as a trigger delay, too (SYNC = trigger in, GATE = trigger output, PITCH = delay time).

    Each VCO has an analog 1V/octave input including a fine tune control (+/-1 semitone) and pitch control (approx. 10 octaves), two freely assignable CV inputs, two freely assignable potentiometers, a trigger input for Sync/LFO-reset as well as a Gate and VCO/LFO output

    The display can show a graphic of the selected waveforms.

    All global parameters and also the VCO's setings can be named and saved as a non-voltaile patch by the user. 32 memory locations are available.

    In just 6HP two Minimoog circuits are integrated; the transistor noise with three timbres and the glide generator with it's unique characteristic. 

    The noise-generating transistors are hand selected and analyzed to ensure that the noise has the same timbre as in the Minimoog. furthermore the noise is filtered with other transistors in order to producre red and pink noise. 

    In the Minimoog the Glide had a very unconventional, slightly exponential characteristic and the gliding up was significantly faster than gliding down. This behaviour was faithfully recreated in the Glide + noise module. The circuitry was expanded by a mode switch that determines if it glides up only, down only or in both directions. 
    A specialty of the Mini was taken over: the glide does not work constantly but it's being activated only when a key is depressed. For this reason the module has a HOLD gate input which makes it possible to gate the glide activity, be it with a sequencer for 303-ish sildes or how ever you like. With the on/off switch the glide can be completely deactivated.

    Accurate clone of the transistor VCA from the early Minimoog. To be exact it's a cascaded dual VCA, as the Minimoog had two, connected in series. Use the first for distortion and the second as master VCA. 

    This VCA module has two audio inputs with attenuators. For the first VCA you can jumper-select a high-gain mode which causes the circuit to overdrive. Similar to a guitar amp you can use the 1st VCA for controlling input level and distortion while the 2nd determines the output level. The amount of distortion depends also on the setting of audio 1 ?& 2 controls . The distortion clips the odd harmonics much more than the even ones which is a behaviour similar to tube amps. 

    The CV inputs 1 and 2 plus the offset potentiometer control the first VCA, while the Master CV input and the Master potentiometer control the second one. 
    If nothing is plugged into the master CV input, the Master control is the output volume controller. When a CV is present, the potentiometer turns into an attenuator. The master CV input is sensitve and can be overmodulated with high-amplitude CVs. 

    The module has a linear characterstic and should be modulated with exponential envelopes, e.g. the Dual Contour by AJH Synth which is a Minimoog envelope clone.

Just like the original also the module is built entirely discrete with transistors, yet due to improved cicruitry the really aweful temperature stability of the Mk1-Minimoog is history. The sound is the same and the module features some modifications like PWM. 

    This VCO is surely not only interesting for hardcore Minimoog fans because it offers all of Minimoog's waveforms at individual outputs, also the "sharktooth" wave. 
    There are two selectable types of sync with controllable intensity. Besides exponential FM we also find linear FM. An other addition is the manually and voltage controllable pulse width modulation; it wasn't implemented in the minimoog and you were only able to select between fixed pulse widths. 
    The octave switch allows for setting the VCO in LFO mode and with negative CVs at the inputs it can oscillate pretty slowly. 
    The module can read internal CVs via the Doepfer Buss as long as no cable is inserted to the 1V/octave input. 

    The VCO is not oriented on later Minimoogs which partially used op-amps or transistor arrays with FET amplifiers - no, in this case the very early and rare Minimoogs are of interest which had tranistor based VCOs. The bad temperature stability which was caused by a design flaw in the CV summing stage was revised by AJH Synth. That means the oscillator sounds like it's supposed to and it's frequency remains stable. The transistors' specifications and values for resistors and capacitors are original.

    BBD circuits can be treated as a chain of Sample and Hold units (S/H) which pass on their voltages to the next S/H in the chain at each clock pulse. 
    In any case the sounds generated by module A-188-1 are very special. 

    Typical applications are: Flanger, Chorus, Analog Delay or Karplus/Strong synthesis. 

    But as the A-188-1 has a lot of very unique features (voltage controlled clock rate / delay time with extreme range, polarity switches for the CV inputs, feedback and BBD out/mix, clock and CV output of the high speed VCO, BBD clock input, feedback insert, feedback up to self-oscillation) a lot of unusual applications can be realized with the module (e.g. delay controlled by ADSR, envelope, random or sequencer with positive or negative effect). 

    The A-188-1 also has no built-in anti-alisaing filter in order not to limit the possibilities of the module. For this the CV out is intended.

    The Dual VC Delay consists of 2 equal, independent delays A and B, each with it´s own feedback loop.

    Each contains a 6dB HP and a 6dB LP filter (not VC), but the internal feedback loop can be opened by patching a cable into the „IN FB“ - jacks to route other signal-processing modules into the feedback-loop. Please note that there is no „Dry-Signal“-path. By designing the module, we thought, it would be mostly used in combination with other modules to achieve some echoes and reverberated ambience, one could put one delay in the feedback-path of another delay for example – there are many different routing configurations, achieving strange modulated reverberated space by combining several Dual VC Delay-modules in various manner.

    Due to it´s vast flexibility, the module offers load´s of possibilities for hours-longing sessions of mangling signals, pitch modulation and the generation of phantastic ethereal outer galactic spaces. Used in parallel/stereo-mode, it generates voltage controlled modulated spatial effects with it´s own special character. The sound of the Princeton PT2399 delay chip often reminds for BBD-circuit´s which principle in fact shares similarities with the function of the PT2399 chip. Because the audio -and CV - input´s are normalized in the scheme of A=>B, the module is following your needs for many different patching situations easily. The sonic possibilities of using several module together can be mind blowing, especially when the almost endless possibilities of different feedback-routing are explored.

    A-188-2 is a module based on a so-called Bucket Brigade Device (BBD). 

    The main difference between A-188-1 and A-188-2 is the type of BBD circuit that leads to completely different module principles and sounds. The A-188-1 uses different single BBD chips with one signal input and one signal output only. In contrast the A-188-2 uses as so-called tapped BBD that has available six outputs - the so-called taps after the BBD stages 396, 662, 1194, 1726, 2790 and 3328. 

    In the A-188-2 Doepfer uses this special BBD circuit (MN3011) to obtain these module features: 
    The module has available two separate mixing sub-units. For both mixers the levels and polarities of each BBD output can be adjusted to obtain two different mixtures of the BBD outputs. 

    A new type of potentiometers with center detent and center terminal is used for the BBD mixing controls to have a better feel for the neutral position. Each mixer has a wet/dry control at its output that allows choosing between the pure input signal (original), the BBD mix or anything in between. The two outputs can be treated as stereo outputs but it is also possible to use one of the outputs for other applications. 

    The A-188-2 has a feedback section available that is very similar to the one in the A-188-1. But as we now have 6 different BBD outputs available 6 different feedback types are possible. The feedback input socket is normalled to the "396" output. But by patching the feedback socket to any of the single output sockets another BBD tap can be used for the feedback to obtain different sounds. 

    Even external feedback processing is possible (e.g. with a VCA for voltage controlled feedback). 
    The feedback control has polarizer function, i.e. the neutral position is at the center. Left from the center the feedback signal is subtracted from the input signal, right from the center it's added (negative/positive feedback). Even for this potentiometer the new version with center detent is used. 

    A special feedback can be obtained if one of the mix outputs is used for the feedback function. In this case for each tap the positive or negative feedback share can be adjusted. This leads to multiple peaks and/or notches in the frequency response of the module. 

    For each tap of the BBD a separate output socket is available. These sockets can be used for changing the feedback loop - as mentioned above -, for voltage controlled mixing of the taps - e.g. with the voltage controlled mixer A-135 
    or other applications that require access to each single tap. 

    The A-188-2 uses the same high speed VCO (HSVCO) for the BBD clock as the A-188-1. 
    The clock and consequently the delay time can be controlled manually (delay control) and by the two control voltage inputs CV1 and CV2. 
    The sensitivity of CV1 is approximately 1V/oct. CV2 is equipped with a polarizer (a new type of potentiometers with center detent). 

    The HSVCO has a clock output available that is normalled to the clock input socket. 
    These sockets can be used to link different BBD modules and to run them with the same clock. 
    But even other applications with frequency dividers (e.g. A-163) or PLL (e.g. A-196) are conceivable. 

    A voltage composed of the manual delay control, CV1 and CV2 is available at the CV out socket, e.g. to control an external clock suppression filter as the A-188-2 is not equipped with such a filter (same as for the A-188-1).

    The high performance VCO Omega-Phi of the CS-8 series is a so-called thru zero oscillat or t o t he power of 2. Oscillat ors of this type are able to process negative control voltages resulting in a reversal of their curve. With that technical difference, for thru zero oscillators are arising very significant properties. In comparison to ordinary oscillators the harmonic relationships will kept constant independently of the modulation depth (index), wherefore true Fm synthesis is possible with this type of oscillators (provided that they bring the required technical qualities with it). The ultimate feature of the Omega-Phi, moreover, is the capability of an additional true phase-modulation section. It is connected downstream to the oscillator core and the sound is very similar to the sound aesthetic of the frequency modulation. The downstream architecture provides lots and mighty possibilities of sound synthesis. E.g. it is possible to create PM sounds (Phi section) and having at the same time clean standard waves at the core outputs (Omega sect ion) for ot her kinds of synt hesis. Also modulat ion cascades are possible, where a first modulat or creat es FM synt hesis and a second one a phase modulation of the FM result. 

    Moreover, there exists a number of synchronization possibilities, interesting intermediate states (between "Thru zero" and "normal"), for each of the both sections (Omega & Phi) a by one oct ave decimat ed sub frequency wave and apart from PWM a mighty saw-tooth wave-shaping with 1-2 octaves-up effect and an absolute super round sine-wave.

    A-110-4 is a so-called Thru Zero Quadrature VCO. The term "quadrature" means in this connection that the oscillator outputs sine and cosine waveforms simultaneously. The term "Thru-Zero" means that even "negative" frequencies are generated. But this is a bit misleading term as negative frequencies do not really exist. "Negative" means in this connection simply that the sine/cosine waves will stop when the linear control voltage reaches 0V and continue with the opposite direction as the linear control voltage becomes negative and vice versa. 

    The module has two control sections: linear and exponential. The exponential section consists of the XTune control, the 1V/Oct input and the XFM input with the corresponding attenuator XFM. The exponential control voltage is the sum of these three voltages. The linear section consists of the LTune control and the LFM input with the corresponding attenuator LFM. The linear control voltage is the sum of these two voltages. 

    The main advantage of the A-110-4 compared to other Thru Zero VCOs is that the design uses a sine/cosine core. The sine/cosine waves are not derived from other waveforms (e.g. sawtooth or triangle) by means of waveshaping. Rather the sine and cosine waves are the core of the VCO which results in very pure waves with a minimum of distortion and overtones.
